please make Viplala movie, Tim? Stop motion + live action? please? PLEAAAAASE?

Tell him, mr. Depp. Tell him he HAS to make a Viplala movie. It is so much HIS story.

since you all seem to be picking the first option, I will tell you: Viplala is a tiny wizard, but his magic doesnt always turn out like it is supposed to. And sometimes.....it does....but people like that even less. He has a kind heart through. The family of Bloms, who accidentally finds him in their apartment, takes him in. he causes a lot of mess and he is sort of helpless and clumsy. But when the Bloms get in trouble and he turns them into his size to help them escape, he gets much more self-confident. He sort of turns from a loser into a leader, and he acts very brave. they have many adventures, but Viplala forgets how to turn them back into regular human beings again. He of course succeeds at the most awfully wrong moment, again.
He is an outsider-character, someone different and not familiar with the rules of the society much like Edward Scissorhands. He is a loner, other Viplalas mock him and the humans treat him as a weird sensation. He is sort of like a confused, child-like grown-up in a miniature form. I have always pictured Viplala as a 23 -25 year old, who has to find his way and his purpose in the world, makes a lot of mistakes but has that core quality that success really takes. He thinks he has to be perfect in twinkling (his word for magic), but in truth he has something more important: courage, kindness, love for his family, selflessness, helpfulness, energy, and also the most important: a childlike joy of life and passion.

Sheesh, I wish they had an english translation of those books. My auntie's Dutch, and she's promised to do a somewhat translation and send the books to me. So I must either learn Dutch, or pay some publishing company to translate and distribute these in the U.S...

And from what I've heard, it would make a neat movie, and have either Tim Burton or Luc Besson do it.

that would explain a lot, if there is no english translation. It is very hard to believe though, I mean at least in UK they should have had that.... strange.

a nice burtonesque piece of info about the writer from the site http://www.annie-mg.com

http://www.annie-mg.com wrote:
Annie loathed black funerals. She preferred to envisage her own in pink, her favorite color. One is going to heaven after all, she thought. Not hell. The funeral procession was by boat and, in accordance with her wishes, it was a festive occasion with song and laughter. It was a glorious day. In the funeral memorial book Goodbye Annie, Flip later wrote: "The last few years she was blind. A year before her death she broke a hip and the pain never left her. She shuffled through the house, leaning heavily on her walker. She even lost her taste for her Camels, and stubbed them out after just a few puffs. She was unusually gloomy. And almost always tired. Months before her death she invariably answered my question as to how she was by telling me that she was dying. Annie lived a fabulous and fascinating life and has left so much behind. She received a great deal of recognition. Further aging and deterioration and an even greater dependence on others - a prospect she dreaded - were spared her. 'My dearest, my dearest, what more can you ask?'"

"Jip&Janneke and Minous of this author SHOULD be translated to english, they might be rare though

/\ speak any of those?
I guess I can consider myself very, very lucky.

Wait, I speak Japanese! And a little Hebrew. I should look out for those!
I can't even find Comet in Moominland (which WAS translated into English) so this is going to be a tough hunt. I love a good, colourful book though. And there should be an English translation, it's not fair, I feel left out, and the books would be a huge hit, the author sounds like she was a genius.

a short part of Viplala and Viplala returns is translated in english on the page I linked you to, but that page was specially made in memory of Annie and thats all they translated I think.
Here:
http://www.annie-mg.com/huiskamer/annies_werk/boeken_english/wiplala3.html

http://www.annie-mg.com/huiskamer/annies_werk/boeken_english/wiplalaweer2.html

just keep clicking the sentences at the bottom of the page.

outtake:
Viplala returns wrote:
It was a medium-large, shaggy, grayish-brown dog with a bristly muzzle, mean eyes and a short stubby tail. Its hackles were up and it immediately started barking angrily. Then it sniffed around the floor with its wet nose and whimpered.
Mr. Blom fumbled in his pocket and pulled out Wiplala.
"Twinkle him back," he snapped.
"But he was going to fire you," said Wiplala. "He wants to hurt you."
"Twinkle him back this instant," ordered Mr. Blom.
"He's... he's dangerous," said Wiplala. "He's better off as a dog."
"Grrrr..." snarled the dog.
"Sorry, Mr. Peterson," said Mr. Blom very politely to the dog. "This little fellow has twinkled you, but he'll fix it up again. He's going to twinkle you back immediately. Aren't you, Wiplala? Twinkle Mr. Peterson back! Get on with it!"
Wiplala raised his left hand. His lips moved. He muttered a few words. But nothing happened. Mr. Peterson stayed a dog.

Tim Burton is pretty much the only director who could pull it off.

I've read that translation you posted Foxy, I love it! IT reminds me of my favorite childhood books, like Roald Dahl or Hans Christian Anderson. I really wish there would be a Tim Burton movie based on it, it would be like James and the Giant Peach, I think, with stop-motion tiny people riding a pigeon... I can see it already!

yesss! now there is three of us...hmm it is not much. But it is a start.

I imagine Viplala biting his nails constantly, showing teeth a lot, acting a little like some animal, when he is the only one that is small. when he turns others into his size, he´d be like.....tiny Robin Hood or.... James Bond. No nervousness at all.
if it were played by a real actor, who would it be? ...hmmm.....Billy Boyd? It wouldnt be typecasting, I mean, he would be even TINIER. EXTRA tiny.

nah...he can perhaps play the director of the restaurant...or Dr. Vink. But Viplala should be a relatively young bloke. not a kid, but young. Or then totally stop-motion.

I think it would be cool to have it be a stop-motion and live action hybrid, like James and the Giant peach was.

also there should be another, a secret version of Viplala. starring Benicio Del Toro. what happens if you put Dr. Gonzo and Viplala together (omg I am so obsessed with those. help me. please.) Twinkler in delirium...sacriligeous!
that thought just became un-tolerably funny to myself.

heck I am going to boost this again. since I am the only one posting ANYTHING I can triple post as much as I like.
My synopsis from TBC wrote:
Viplala is a clumsy little wizard who is chased away by other viplalas cause he cannot get his magic right. he calls it twinkling. Nella Della finds him in the kitchen closet and he ends up living with the family Bloms, where Jonathan and Nella Della are thrilled to have him, but the father who is a very serious writer is very disgruntled to have to put up with an annoying twinkler who doesnt give him a moment of minds´peace. Viplala is very defensive, acting a little helpless and childish, and Nella Della is very motherly and always taking care of him. Viplala starts his stay at the Bloms with twinkling their cat Flea into stone. He manages to twinkle him back though. But the Bloms´ neighbor, a starving poet called Arthur Hollidee is not as lucky, and he is turned into a stone statue. Hollidees sister comes to look for him, in shock to find his brother turned into stone, with one arm stretched and an empty plat in his hand. Mr Blom tells Emily Hollidee that Arthur turned into stone from starvation. She decides to take him home and try to offer him some peas and porridge every day to see if she can wake ´him up. When they are trying to take him home the mayor happens to pass by and decides to open the "statue" on a city square, which he later does, but for the moment he just throws a bed sheet over him. when the statue is opened, everybody starts buying the poets ´books so Nella Della warns Viplala not to change the poet back while he is so famous and earning a lot.

the Bloms go to dine out in a fancy restaurant but the father forgets to check the prices, so they cannot afford to pay the bill. Viplala twinkles the family into his size, and you can see surprisingly that he now acts as a leader of the group, very brave, making decisions, taking risks - all the defensiveness and helplessness seems to be gone, when the others arent much bigger than him any more. He takes them home, but they are discovered by the house maid who brings a huge crowd to see the "tiny people" so they have to escape again. Viplala talks a pigeon into flying them somewhere safe. So it flies them to the royal palace. There Viplala brings a stone statue of Atlas to life, who helps them get inside. a little girl sees Atlas walking around from the street, but her father doesnt believe her. The Bloms get very hungry and find no food in the palace. Viplala even tries to turn some boxes into food, but ends up turning them into stone boxes.
well, they somehow get away from the palace and then end up in a grocery store, where they eat themselves through all the food and are thought to be mice. Jonathan falls into a barrel of cucumbers and starts smelling terribly of vinegar. They then hide in a parcel and are sent to the hopsital, cause it is a fruit basket for a sick girl. The girl discovers the family when she smells vinegar that should not be in a fruit basket. She befriends the family and starts healing fast, cause Mr Blom tells her stories and makes her eat. But the girl is forced to reveal her friends when Jonathan gets sick. It comes out a nurse has long known about them, but she has decided if she is not supposed to see them she sort of wont. They meet Dr Vink who smuggles them out of the hospital in his briefcase. Unfortunately the briefcase gets stolen and when the Bloms and Viplala start screaming the thief gets frightened by the "ghosts" and drops the briefcase into a channel. They are rescued by a duck and end up in a house of two old maids. They somehow manage to call Dr Vink and the open phone book leaves the old maids to think they have ghosts, hearing Jonathan use a typewriter at night and all. so they too call dr Vink. He manages to get the Bloms into his briefcase but Viplala stays behind and the Bloms decide to return. They find Viplala sitting in a flower pot, and he gives them some berries which turns them big again. The old maids think they are crazy seeing a family of three sitting on top of their closet in a flower pot- the Bloms flee as soon as possible. the old maids call Dr Vink Dr Vink assures the old maids the fried liver they ate made them hallucinate.

the Bloms return home, on the way Viplala turns the poet Arthur Hollidee into human again. Then he disappears cause he thinks since he can twinkle well now the other viplalas will take him back. The Bloms miss him terribly.
So in the second book the Bloms are short of money and Mr. Blom has to find a job. Nella Della keeps putting down every job he thinks about but they all think he can manage being a secretary to a soup factory director. When they have more money they pass a food stand on the street and decide to buy something nice, to their utter surprise they find Viplala inside a crab salad. He has been chased away again and is very depressed, cause he has no place in the world and comes back to live with the Bloms. He does all sort of little tricks like turning pot roast into ice cream and then ice cream into cauliflower (while actually trying to restore it back to pot roast) and then he gets stuck in the fridge and falls sick so they have to call Dr Vink to cure him. Viplala also goes to school with Jonathan where he is seen and chased but Jonathan lies him into a frog. only one girl doesnt believe him...
One day Mr Blom goes to work and he finds Viplala in his pocket. He warns him not to do anything silly. But Mr Peters, the director of the soup factory gets angry at mr. Blom for making a mistake in an advert, writing "plum soup" instead of "tomato soup" that the factory is making, and everyone around the world starts ordering plum soup when they have absolutely no plums. So Viplala, to prevent Peters from sacking Mr. Blom, turns the director into a dog and a whole mountain of tomatoes in the factory yard into plums. They take the dog along and try to give it away to mrs. Peters but she doesnt want him, which gets Mr Peters really depressed (as much as you can tell from a dog).
Viplala also turns mr Peters´s secretary into a bird when she comes to collect donations for stray animals. And she flies out the window and gone she is.
then Mr. Blom pretends Mr. Peters has gone to Italy to order plums. Nella Della invents a recipe and the factory gets really famous with plum soup.
Mr. Peters runs after Mrs. Peters one day, who is greatly disturbed by this shaggy dog, who she doesnt know is her twinkled husband, following her, and gives him away to a captain she meets on the street who takes it to a family with two children. the Bloms go to rescue the dog, and Viplala climbs in through the window of coal cellar. but he gets trapped in the house after he has let the dog out. He leaves coal traces everywhere and decorates butter with radishes and cigarettes, switches on a coffee grinder, falls into milk can, dries himself in a white table cloth, all of which makes the land lady upset and alarmed; but her husband doesnt give a horses ass about all the paranormal activity going on. Even when Viplala makes smily faces in the jam. The Bloms try to get inside the house to look for him, pretending to sell shoe laces or being a head of the Lawn Society claiming the master of the house has won a prize for his pretty lawn.
Viplala somehow gets out and ends up in a shoe shop, and hides in a pair of boots which are picked up by a a young lady, who then goes into a hat shop. Viplala gets an idea seeing parcels with hats to be delivered to clients. He writes a card of his own and replaces one on a bag, and sends himself to the Bloms inside a hat.

Next day he goes to work with mr Blom again, they take Mr Peters along. The supervisor of the factory suspects Mr Blom has kidnapped mr Peters cause the directors passport is in the desk drawer so he cannot be in Italy ordering plums. Just when the supervisor threatens to call the police, Viplala manages to turn mr Peters back into human in another room. Mr Peters walks in and defends Mr Blom. Later he says in secret the Blom family have been really good to him when he was a dog, calling him sir and everything. but he is angry at his wife, and he has also overheard her doing all the things he doesnt like her doing, watching TV and eating chicken. She cant imagine how he knows it, having been in Italy. They then hear shouting from the street and detect it coming from the park, where a lady is sitting up in a tree hatching eggs. It is Mr Peters´s secretary who has been a bird and who Viplala turned back too. she refuses to even come down cause she still feels like a bird, so they have to call fire fighters with a ladder.
When they go back, Nella Della is frightened not to find Viplala. But Jonathan calms her saying Viplala is in his toy house.
so Viplala stays. For the time being.
