John Christopher Depp II
Born: 9 June 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, USA

Raised in Florida, by the age of 15 Johnny Depp had dropped out of school in the hopes of becoming a rock musician. He was a member of several garage bands, including The Kids. The rebellious teenager didn't find success as a musician, but he accidentally got pulled into acting when visiting California. His first ever movie role was in Wes Craven's horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984, followed by roles in Private Resort (1985) and Oliver Stone's Platoon (1986). A ladies man from an early age, Johnny Depp got married back in 1983 (at the age of 20) to Lori Anne Allison. The marriage was quickly over (they divorced in 1986) and Johnny had a string of relationships with actresses and models such as Sherilyn Fenn, Jennifer Grey and Kate Moss.

Johnny's acting career got a jump (no pun intended) when in 1987 he got the role of Officer Tom Hanson in the TV-Series "21 Jump Street". This elevated him to a hearth throb status, and made sure his photos were to be found from the bedroom walls of countless teenage girls. But this was not what Johnny Depp wanted. He wanted to be taken seriously as a leading cinematic actor. This dream came true in the form of his leading roles in Cry-Baby (1989) directed by John Waters, and Edward Scissorhands (1990) directed by Tim Burton. It was Edward Scissorhands specifically that really brought Johnny Depp to fame; it was a role that made both the critics and audiences fall in love with him, despite the heavy makeup he was under. This has become one of Depp’s trademarks later in his career; he has never been afraid of wearing a large amount of makeup, strange wigs or false teeth in order to get into the character. This has given him a chance to build reputation as a good actor, rather than just a pretty face.

Johnny has also always favoured smaller productions and independent productions. Throughout the 90’s Johnny Depp appeared in movies that were usually interesting, often off-beat, sometimes plain strange. The few movies he appeared in that weren’t very good were usually the more mainstream ones, such as the thrillers Nick of Time and The Astronaut’s Wife. His roles as cross-dressers, alcoholics, drug addicts and ladies men might have often been reflections of his own rebellious personality.

In 1999 Johnny Depp had a daughter (Lily) with his girlfriend Vanessa Paradis. In 2002 they had a son, Jack. At the same time, Johnny Depp seemed to drift to more mainstream roles, this time with better results. In 2001, he starred as the drug dealer George Jung in the movie Blow, and as Inspector Fred Abberline in the Jack the Ripper movie From Hell. It was 2003 that marked the biggest change in Depp’s career since Edward Scissorhands. His role as the constantly drunk, but always likable and eccentric, Captain Jack Sparrow in the movie Pirates of the Caribbean brought him an enormous amount of new teenage fans, and an Oscar nomination. The movies surprise success guaranteed Johnny Depp the chance for enormous pay checks and a variety of new roles. The following year Depp received his second Oscar nomination, this time for the role of Sir James Matthew Barrie for the movie Finding Neverland.

2005 saw Depp reunite with director Tim Burton again, for the movies Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Corpse Bride. The success of these movies has kept the fan base satisfied, whilst they are waiting for the release of the two Pirates of the Caribbean sequels which were shot back to back. The first, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Dead Man’s Chest, is to be released in July 2006, and the second in 2007.

While he is not working, Depp is enjoying his life with his girlfriend and two children, living mostly in Paris. At the moment Depp is at the peak of his career, but when it comes to Depp, there is no knowing what he will do next.
